Sheriff Investigating Death of a 2 1/2 Year Old Child

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At approximately 7:35pm last night, deputy sheriffs were dispatched to a private residence on Knight Bottom Road in eastern, unincorporated Gordon County in response to a report of a drowned child. The first deputy arrived on scene within 6 minutes and was quickly joined by Gordon County Fire Rescue personnel who initiated emergency medical aid. A volunteer firefighter had responded to the residence and was attempting cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before the arrival of deputies. The Fire Rescue personnel worked rapidly to attempt to revive the child, and an air-rescue helicopter was sent to the scene. The two-and-half year old boy was transported to Gordon Hospital emergency room where he was subsequently pronounced dead despite the concentrated efforts to save him by all of the medical personnel.

Sheriff’s investigators were on the scene for several hours. The child’s parents reported having found the child unresponsive in a partially filled swimming pool before calling 911.

The pool had some water standing in the deepest end, and was not fenced. There is no reason to suspect foul play. The investigation by the Sheriff’s Office is continuing however, and more details may be forthcoming.
