Dynamite Discovered By Workman Shuts Down Craigtown Road / CSX Railroad

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At about 4 p.m. this afternoon (March 20), deputy sheriffs were dispatched to the vicinity of the intersection of Craigtown Road and CSX Railroad near Resaca in response to the report of explosives being discovered nearby. Investigating deputies determined that a workman had discovered a box of old dynamite sticks at an abandoned, aged structure and picked up the box. He was carrying the dynamite to the fire department with the intentions of turning it in to fire/rescue officials when he decided it was too dangerous for him to have in the vehicle. He put the dynamite out on the roadside and called 911. There were no houses near the location where the dynamite was abandoned and no evacuations were necessary. Deputies did however close Craigtown Road and CSX Railroad for approximately one hour and forty-five minutes until the arrival of explosive disposal technicians from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The explosives were collected by the officers and rendered safe by the GBI technicians. The GBI agents described the dynamite as being old, unstable, and potentially very dangerous. Sheriff Ralston urges anyone who finds anything that appears to be explosives to call 911 immediately.
