Ellijay Woman Killed in Car Crash on Knight Road

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At approximately 2 a.m. this morning (August 17), a deputy sheriff was patrolling US Highway 411 near the Ranger community when he observed a Toyota ‘Scion’ automobile travelling at a high rate of speed. The deputy activated his emergency equipment and attempted to catch up to the automobile which sped away at a higher rate of speed. The Toyota turned onto Red Bud Road (State Route 156) and continued onto Knight Road as the deputy tried to keep the car in sight. After travelling a short distance on Knight Road, the vehicle went out of control and crashed. Both occupants were ejected. One occupant, Cassie R. Smith, age 28, of Elijay, Georgia, was killed. The deputy rendered aid to the surviving occupant until other emergency personnel arrived. He was transported to Rome, Georgia where he remains hospitalized. The Georgia State Patrol is conducting the investigation into the crash.
