Sheriff Investigating Automobile Fire Death

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

Shortly before 3 a.m. this morning (November 20th), deputy sheriffs were dispatched to the neighborhood around Louise Avenue off Soldiers Pathway just north of Calhoun in an unincorporated County area in response to a report of an automobile on fire. Authorities were alerted by a passerby who’d called 911. A deputy sheriff arrived 4 minutes later and found a late model Nissan Maxima on fire about the engine compartment. The vehicle appeared to have come to a stop, striking a small tree, after leaving the street a short distance away. The deputy retrieved his fire extinguisher and attempted to combat the flames, but the fire rapidly grew too intense to approach. County Fire/Rescue personnel arrived quickly and managed to contain and extinguish the blaze, but the driver was unable to escape and died at the scene. The identity of the driver, a local man, has been tentatively established, pending notification of the next of kin. The Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit responded to the incident, and detectives have questioned a number of witnesses. The body has been sent to the State Crime Laboratory in Decatur, Georgia to undergo a post mortem examination. The investigation by the Sheriff’s Office and Coroner is continuing.
