Sheriff Investigating Homicide in Hill City Community, Suspect Captured Near Pine Chapel

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

At approximately 9:30 p.m. Sunday night, November 2nd, deputy sheriffs were dispatched to a private residence on Midway Road in the Hill City community near the Whitfield County line in response to the report of a shooting. Deputies arrived within 8 minutes of receiving the call and found the body of an adult male who’d apparently died as a result of gunfire. Deputies at the scene rapidly identified a suspect and determined that this individual had fled the scene soon after the shooting. Sheriff’s detectives and crime scene specialists were dispatched to the area and determined that the incident involved two crime scenes. Detectives obtained search and arrest warrants, and spent several hours collecting physical evidence and interviewing witnesses. Identification of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Detectives have not determined a motive for the shooting as of this time. A description of the suspect along with that of the vehicle he is believed to be occupying has been sent to all surrounding law enforcement agencies. Deputy sheriffs are actively searching for James Douglas Talley, also known as “Jimmy”, age 52, white/male, height 6’00”, weight 205 lbs., green eyes, grey/brown hair worn short. He is believed to be driving a tan or orange 1977 Ford pickup truck bearing Georgia license plate ASW 3536Talley is wanted by the Sheriff’s Office for Murder…

UPDATE:

At approximately 1:30 a.m., Monday morning, November 3rd, deputy sheriffs located the missing truck abandoned on the roadside of Evergreen Road in (rural) north/central Gordon County. Additional deputies were deployed in the area along with a Sheriff’s K9 unit and an intensive ground search was undertaken. Later, at approximately 2:15 a.m., the sheriff and a senior deputy were coordinating the manhunt for the suspect along Evergreen Road when they observed a brush fire in the woods along the roadway. The sheriff and  deputy quickly stopped their vehicle and recognized the suspect, James Douglas Talley, sitting at the fire. The fire appeared to have grown beyond Talley’s control and he was attempting to extinguish it with a can of beer. Talley, who had removed his shoes in an apparent effort to warm his feet in the sub-freezing temperatures,  still had the firearm that investigating detectives believe to be the murder weapon in his possession. He was taken into custody without resistance and transported to the county jail where he remains. Detectives are still gathering evidence and interviewing potential witnesses. The victim’s body will be sent to the State Crime Laboratory in Decatur, Georgia to undergo a post-mortem examination. Sheriff Ralston said, “This appears to us to be a senseless killing. I am pleased that we were able to swiftly bring the investigation to a successful resolution by making an arrest within five hours of responding to the report of the crime. We will prepare this case for presentation to our District Attorney and the defendant will face a jury of Gordon County citizens.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim.”
