Sheriff’s Office Returning Ordinance/Code Enforcement Duties to Board of Commissioners as Veteran Deputy Retires

Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

In January, 2009, at the request of the Gordon County Board of Commissioners, the Sheriff’s Office assumed the duties of ordinance and code enforcement in the unincorporated areas of the County. At that time the Board wanted a Georgia POST certified officer in the position. This was accomplished by the Board funding a dedicated position on the Sheriff’s staff for these duties.DSCN0422 This month, the deputy assigned to these duties, William Daniel, has announced his retirement in a few weeks. William has been employed as a deputy since 2009, and was a Calhoun police officer for a number of years prior to his employment in the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Ralston said of Deputy Daniel, “William has been one of our best employees, he is a fine man. William received the “Extra Mile Award” in 2010 for his work in ordinance enforcement. He has always taken the approach of education and voluntary compliance in his work, in that codes and ordinances are civil, not criminal in nature. William is an ordained minister and lay pastor. He is also a dedicated family man. We will all miss working with him on a daily basis, and we wish him well in his retirement.” Effective July 1st, the Sheriff’s Office will be returning the duties of ordinance and code enforcement to the Board of Commissioners, as the ordinance enforcement officer position will not be filled after Deputy Daniel’ retirement. The Sheriff has requested that his FY2015/16 budget be amended to reflect the elimination of this position. The Sheriff has notified the Board that the Sheriff’s Office would continue to carry out ordinance enforcement duties until the Board appoints an ordinance officer, if all five Commissioners make such a request.
