IN HONOR OF THE 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, the Sheriff’s Office is flying the original 13 star United States flag this July 4th Holiday season. This flag is affectionately known as the “Betsy Ross” flag after the legend of its creation. Pictured holding the flag here are Sheriff’s Lieutenant Chad Phillips (left) and Captain Ben Worley (right).
Sheriff Ralston commented that he remembered the 1976 Bicentennial Celebration as well, when he and other Calhoun elementary school students (pictured here) formed an outline of the nation in front of the Courthouse some 50 years ago.

NATIONAL PEACE OFFICERS MEMORIAL DAY
National Police Week
May 10-16, 2026
“This week is National Police Week all across our nation. It was first established in 1962 by Congress and President John F. Kennedy to honor law enforcement, and particularly those officers who made the Supreme Sacrifice. Each year, we pause on May 15 to honor the memory of all peace officers who gave the last, full measure serving our nation, our states, and our local communities. This week, please take a moment to reflect and thank the men and women who daily put on a badge and put themselves at risk for others. May God bless them and keep them. We’re proud to serve the finest people in Georgia.”

VETERAN DEPUTY RECOGNIZED FOR LIFE SAVING, 2nd INCIDENT
Tuesday, May 12, 2026
Sheriff Mitch Ralston Reports:

On Thursday afternoon, May 7, 2026, Sheriff’s Lieutenant Chad Phillips was on patrol on US Highway 41 at the CSX Railway overpass when he observed a woman laying on the railroad tracks. Lieutenant Phillips stopped and rushed to her aid on foot. He roused the woman, who appeared inebriated, and removed her from the tracks. She told responders she had placed herself on the tracks intentionally. Lieutenant Phillips summoned emergency medical personnel who removed her by ambulance.
Today, Sheriff Mitch Ralston presented Lieutenant Phillips with the GCSO Meritorious Service Medal for his actions on May 7.
Lieutenant Phillips quite probably prevented a tragedy. His citation read in part that his “keen observational skills and calmness under stress were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Office of Sheriff”.
This is Lieutenant Phillips second award for life saving actions; in September, 2010, he and 2 other deputy sheriffs rescued the driver of a burning automobile on Interstate 75.
He has served in the Sheriff’s Office since 2002.
